Constitution Day
The Constitution of the United States is the basic governing document of our democracy. It has endured the test of time since it was implemented in 1789. However, even though it has endured longer than any other nation’s formal constitution, there have been arguments over its meaning from the time it was adopted. The present is no exception as we debate issues such as gun control and whether the Constitution sanctions policies of torture or near torture when the country’s national security is challenged. The reason that we celebrate Constitution Day is to recognize the Constitution's positive contributions to our civilized society as well as to have a dialogue about its meaning and relevance in contemporary life.
