"I am from China, and I have been living in Montgomery for two years. As a non-native speaker of English, language proficiency is a vital element for the well-being of my new life. It is also a necessity before I start studying in college as a credit student. I enrolled in the AUMESL program last year. The program helped me greatly in improving my vocabulary, understanding the language, and building my confidence. The Study Partner Program offered me a great opportunity to interact with the native students and to apply what I learned from class to the real life. Not only did the AUMESL program polished my English skills, but it also opened the door for me to study at AUM as a credit student. Moreover, I met many wonderful people who have made my life much more interesting."

The AUMESL program helps non-native speakers of English to improve their English language skills. The courses run every eight weeks, five times in a year. Since students come to the program with different levels of English language competency, new students are asked to take a placement test before the start of each half term or eight weeks. These students are also interviewed for their speaking abilities. Based on the results of the placement test and the interviews, students are placed into different language proficiency levels.
The program courses are focused on four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. These courses are also taught at different proficiency levels depending on the number of the students in a particular term and their mastery of the English language.

Study Partner Program
This program is a collaborative effort of Auburn University Montgomery English as a Second Language (AUMESL) program and AUM School of Nursing. Every week English as a Second Language students meet with AUM Nursing students to talk about a variety of assigned topics. The ESL students who are taking at least one ESL course from the courses offered in the AUMESL program are automatically admitted to Study Partner Program.
Study Partner Program provides ample opportunities for the ESL learners to converse with native speakers of English in an academic environment. The ESL learners will build their confidence talking to native speakers from the AUM School of Nursing by improving their conversational skills every week.
In Summer 2006, Study Partner Program was featured in the news. Twenty students from the University of Ulsan who attended the Intensive English Program were also among the ESL participants of the Study Partner Program from June to August 2006. Having watched a movie with a health-related theme, the ESL and Nursing students exchanged their views on the specific problem and communicated on its cultural implications.
