Master's of Sociology
The Auburn Montgomery Master’s degree in Sociology (M.A. or M.S.) is offered as an Interdepartmental Program between the Auburn College of Liberal Arts (the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work), the Auburn College of Agriculture (the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology), and the Auburn Montgomery School of Liberal Arts (the Department of Sociology). This cooperative program is administered by three Co-Directors, one from each of the participating departments.
Graduate students may choose either a thesis or non-thesis options. The non-thesis option was designed to assist those students who are employed fulltime yet would like to receive additional academic training. Persons choosing the non-thesis option will generally use it as a terminal degree. Regardless of whether a thesis or non-thesis option is chosen, students admitted to the program will three core courses (theory, methods and statistics) and must perform satisfactorily in all of them. The remaining coursework is selected in consultation with the student's Graduate Advisory Committee.
Admission into the program requires:
- Application to the Graduate School
- Graduate Records Exam scores submitted to the Admissions Office
- Official copies of all transcripts from previous institutions submitted to the Admissions Office
- Review of the application by the Interdepartmental Coordinating Committee
The Interdepartmental Coordinating Committee will review the application and the student will be notified of the decision of the committee accordingly.
Perspective students who have not competed Statistics, Methods of Social Research and Social Theory at the undergraduate level will be required to complete these course prior to taking graduate course in any core area.
