About Theatre AUM
On May 23, 1975, Theatre AUM staged its first production, Royall Tyler's The Contrast in 109 Goodwyn Hall.
Before that fateful day, Theatre AUM the dream of Dr. Guin Nance, former dean of Liberal Arts and former chancellor of AUM. By hiring Dr. Mark Pilkinton to head AUM's then-newest department, she gave the university a theatre component it previously had not enjoyed.
In 1977, Dr. Robert A. Gaines took the helm, serving as director of Theatre AUM until his 2007 retirement.
In 1979, the company moved to its present home in Taylor Center and opened the new facility with a production of Fiddler on the Roof in early 1980. That season also brought a second faculty member: Donetta Hornsby, who took over supervision of the technical aspects of teaching and production.
Theatre AUM began its annual competition in the American College Theater Festival in 1982, performing its production of Equus at the University of Alabama. Since then, it has taken three productions to the ACTF Southeastern Regional Festival and has earned numerous awards and honors there.
Mike Winkelman, Distinguished Teaching Professor, became the scenic/lighting designer and technical director in 1990. Val Winkelman officially joined for costume design and technology in 1994. In 2004, Katie Pearson added professional artistry in her roles of managing director and audience services. Neil David Seibel joined the faculty in 2008 as director of performance studies.
