Auburn Montgomery announces 2009 Blue Jean Ball scholarship recipients

The Auburn Montgomery School of Nursing recently awarded $46,000 in Blue Jean Ball scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $2,000. Thirty-nine students received the scholarships.

“This is the largest number we’ve had on this campus,” said Michele Schutt, assistant professor of Nursing. “Auburn University awarded 22 scholarships this year.”

Schutt said scholarship recipients were chosen based on financial needs, exceptional merit and a 2.8 grade point average or higher.

Blue Jean Ball scholarships are given to rising senior, junior and Educational Advancement for Registered Nurses (EARN) Nursing students.

“Without the Blue Jean Ball scholarship, I would not be here,” said Samantha Lane, senior nursing student and recent scholarship recipient. “I have a 5-year-old and a 2-year-old. I didn’t have money to pay for gas for my house for two months, no hot water, no oven. This scholarship has been a huge help.”

The ninth annual Blue Jean Ball, hosted by the Auburn and Auburn Montgomery Schools of Nursing, will be held Friday, Sept. 25, at Pat Dye’s Auburn Oaks in Notasulga to raise funds for the 2010 scholarships.
