HENDERSON, Tenn.—In an early season battle of ranked teams, Freed-Hardeman University defeated Auburn University at Montgomery 79-77 on the second day of the Freed-Hardeman LionBacker Classic.
The game was tight the entire game as neither team led by more than six points. Ken Bingham and Zack Frey scored 18 points each in leading the 18th ranked Lions to the win.
Stephan Jordan scored 18 points and had a game-high 10 rebounds to lead the Senators efforts. Daniel Quinlan scored 15 and Charles Perona scored 14. Senior Kip Small had a solid all-around game with 13 points, five rebounds and a game-high seven assists.
AUM led 41-38 at halftime as Small led the way with 10 of his points in the first half.
The second half was much like the first, but AUM’s struggles at the free throw line hurt the Senators chances. AUM was seven of 16 at the free throw line, while the home-standing Lions hit 16 of 26.
AUM out shot FHU 51 percent to 44 percent, but FHU hit 10 three point shots along with the free throw difference.
The 20th ranked Senators are now 1-1 to start the season while FHU is 2-0. The Senators will be back on the hard court Friday, Nov. 6, when they travel to Oxford, Miss., to face the University of Mississippi in an exhibition game. That game is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
