MOBILE—Carlie Ainsworth had 25 points to lead Auburn University at Montgomery to a season-opening 63-57 win at the University of Mobile.
The Lady Senator had to win in comeback fashion as AUM trailed by as many as 16 in the first half and trailed 37-26 at halftime. AUM actually started its comeback at the right before halftime as Ainsworth drained one of her five three pointers at the horn to cut Mobile’s lead to 11.
Still, the Lady Senators did not catch the home-standing Lady Rams until a put-back basket from Caitlin Cunningham evened the score at 48 at the 8:45 mark.
AUM never trailed again as its largest lead came at the 4:34 mark when Ainsworth stole the ball and her lay up made the score 58-48, as AUM had gone on a 15-0 run.
Cassie Moore had 15 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots, while senior Kala Smith had a game-high eight assists. Courtney Thacker had a team-high seven rebounds and Melanie Gess had six points, six rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals.
The Lady Senators defense fed the comeback as it limited Mobile to only 26 percent shooting in the second half, while shooting over 48 percent.
The loss drops Mobile to 2-1 on the season while AUM starts the year with a win. The Lady Senators don’t have a lot of time to dwell on the game as they will travel to Freed-Hardeman to play in the Freed-Hardeman Lady LionBacker Classic.
AUM will face two teams that played in the national tournament last season and are ranked in the preseason poll. AUM will face Bethel College (Tenn.) in Friday’s action at 4 p.m. The Lady Senators will then face the host team, Freed-Hardeman, in Saturday’s action at 2 p.m.
