MONTGOMERY—Stefan Arnarson’s goal in the 33rd minute of the first half was the only goal of the match in Auburn University at Montgomery’s 1-0 win over Emmanuel College in the opening round match of the Southern States Athletic Conference men’s soccer tournament.
Emmanuel played a defensive style of match, and held the Senators out of the goal, even though AUM outshot the visitors 19-1.
Anel Lilic had an outstanding match in goal for the Lions, coming up with 10 saves, several of which were outstanding athletic stops.
The final 10 minutes of the match saw Emmanuel pick up the pace offensively, as it worked for a tying shot. The AUM defensive back line of Ross, Arnar Thordarson and Vignir Benediktsson was ready as they continually turned Emmanuel away without allowing a shot.
Kile Kennedy was in goal for the Senators and picked up one save in the shutout win. It was his fifth shutout of the season and the ninth of his career.
Arnarson’s goal came on an assist from Christopher Ross who sent a deep pass into the box, which Arnarson was able to get his head on and knock the ball into the upper left hand corner of the net. The goal was Arnarson’s team-leading 12th of the season.
AUM moves to 12-3-2 on the season while Emmanuel’s season ends at 4-8-3.
AUM will host a semi final match against the winner of the Shorter College-Brewton Parker College match. The match will be Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m. at the AUM Soccer Complex.
