HENDERSON, Tenn.—Anna Trull scored 15 points and had seven rebounds to lead 20th-ranked Bethel College (Tenn.) to a 67-54 win over 22nd-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery at the Freed-Hardeman University Lady LionBacker Classic.
Turnovers turned out to be a problem all night for the Lady Senators and those started in the first half. AUM actually led 20-15 with six minutes left in the first half, but was outscored 17-8 over those final few minutes to trail 32-28 at half. AUM committed four turnovers during the Bethel run which led to eight points. AUM finished the first half with 12 turnovers.
The second half did not start great for AUM as Bethel came out and outscored AUM 12-2 to open the half, and led 44-30 before AUM began to cut into the lead.
A Cassie Moore basket with 9:24 left in the game cut the lead to two at 46-44, but that would be as close as the Lady Senators would get. AUM turned the ball over on consecutive possessions and Bethel went on for the win.
AUM finished the game with 21 turnovers which led to 17 points. Bethel also hit their free throws, connecting on 19 of 22 attempts.
Nina Djokovic joined Trull in double digits with 14 points and Teena Carter had 11.
Kala Smith, Carlie Ainsworth and Melanie Gess all had 12 points for AUM and Gess finished with a game-high 11 rebounds.
Along with the turnovers, AUM struggled at the free throw line only hitting 10 of 16 free throws and was four of 12 from behind the three point line.
AUM is now 1-1 on the season and Bethel evens its record at 1-1. The Lady Senators will not have it any easier in tomorrow’s action, as they will face the host team, and fifth-ranked, Freed-Hardeman University at 2 p.m.
