Dr. Bulman was born in Syracuse, New York and raised in Wisconsin and Michigan. She became interested in medieval history after living in France as a child. Her research draws on medieval ecclesiastical court records from the French diocese of Mende in the medieval county of the Gévaudan, which she uses to investigate cultural topics. Her book, The Court Book of Mende and the Secular Lordship of the Bishop, concerns the maintenance of historical memory in the county of the Gévaudan. Dr. Bulman’s current research topic, titled Witnesses to Sorcery, explores the dissemination of magical texts and practices in the Gévaudan. When she is not happily scouring medieval court records, Dr. Bulman enjoys walking her dog, listening to the music of J S Bach, and traveling in Europe.
