Sheila Austin has been named Dean of the AUM School of Education. Her appointment will begin in August.
“It is my pleasure to appoint Dr. Austin as Dean of Education,” said Provost Joe King. “I know she will work diligently with Education faculty and staff and the university administration to advance programs in the school, broaden opportunities for students, and better connect AUM with Montgomery area schools.”
Austin currently serves as an associate dean of Education and as professor and head of the AUM Department of Counselor, Leadership and Special Education. She arrived at Auburn Montgomery in 2007 having retired from Toledo Public Schools in Ohio. She worked at every level of the K-12 system – teacher, assistant principal, deputy superintendent and Chief of Staff – and spent half of her 32-year career in the classroom. She also served as an assistant professor at the University of Toledo, where she co-directed the AmeriCorps program.
As a professor at AUM, she teaches courses in instructional leadership, educational facilities, and school leadership. She also lends her educational expertise to the AUM Confucius Institute, assisting with outreach efforts to Central Alabama schools.
Austin received a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction in 1995 from the University of Toledo, where she also received a master’s in early childhood education in 1993 and a bachelor’s in elementary education in 1974.
“I am honored by the opportunity to serve as Dean for the School of Education,” Austin said. “I look forward to sharing and working with all the faculty and staff at AUM. As the School of Education continues to advance towards innovative and creative goals and initiatives, I encourage my colleagues to continue their forward momentum towards transformational leadership and instruction as we work to fulfill AUM’s mission and execute the measures outlined in the AUM strategic plan.”
