AUM staffers take part in school cleanup at MacMillan International Academy

by User Not Found | Aug 26, 2013

As K-12 students from across Montgomery County headed back to school this week, one school was a little brighter thanks to the efforts of AUM employees. Nine staff members took part in the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce's annual School Cleanup on August 14 at MacMillan International Academy.

The following volunteers scrubbed walls and baseboards, cleared cobwebs, repainted the school library, overturned the school garden, and laid fresh pine straw in the landscaped beds surrounding the school:

  • Mary Green, Continuing Education
  • Travis Johnson, Continuing Education
  • Buffy Lockette, University Relations
  • Carla Lymon, Continuing Education
  • Kimberly Smith, Continuing Education
  • Karen Stankard, Center for Business and Economic Development
  • Joel Sussman, Continuing Education
  • Clara Taylor, Continuing Education
  • Brittany Thomasson, Continuing Education

Additionally, Brittany Higgins – lead material handler for AUM – assisted with delivering pine straw and materials to the school.

“On behalf of the MacMillan faculty, students, and staff, I would like to sincerely thank the AUM volunteers for coming to assist us with getting our school ready for ‘back to school’,” said Principal Angela Kornegay James.

It is the second year AUM has volunteered at MacMillan as part of the school cleanup. In 2012, University Relations and the School of Business teamed up to get the school ready for the start of classes. With this year’s program falling during the first week of AUM’s fall term, University Outreach employees pitched in to get the project completed.
