Learning Disabilities

To be eligible for services, qualified students with learning disabilities who meet the technical and academic standards of Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) must submit to the Center for Disability Services (CDS) current documentation by a qualified provider which describes the disability as outlined below.

A comprehensive evaluation from a clinical psychologist, psychiatrist, neurophysiologist, school psychologist, learning disability specialist, or diagnostician must be provided as outlined below. A high school IEP and/or letter from a physician or other professional will not be sufficient to document a learning disability. Medication cannot be used to imply a diagnosis.

  1. Clear statement of presenting problem; diagnostic interview.

  2. Educational history documenting the impact of the learning disability.

  3. Alternative explanations and diagnoses are ruled out.

  4. Relevant test data with standard scores that support conclusions, and should at least include most recent versions of a comprehensive intelligence battery and a comprehensive achievement battery. Acceptable instruments include:

    1. Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-III or Woodcook Johnson III Cognitive GIA (not an abbreviated test or WISC-R);
    2. Woodcock-Johnson III Test of Achievement including: Broad Written Language (writing fluency, spelling, dictation and proofing); Broad Reading (reading fluency, decoding, and passage comprehension); Broad Math (math fluency, calculation, and reasoning);
    3. Woodcock-Johnson Test of Cognitive Abilities to substantiate any processing and/or memory problems;
    4. Clearly stated diagnosis of learning disability based upon DSM-IV criteria (including DSM-IV-TR code) and supported by several subtests scores which show a significant discrepancy AND are at least approaching one SD below the mean of the test ( in most cases the mean is 100 with a SD of 15).

  5. Defined levels of functioning, limitations and recommendations supported by evaluation data.

  6. Current report dated & signed by the evaluator; current is defined as:

    a. within 2 years of eligibility date for CDS services for freshmen;
    b. within 4 years of eligibility date for CDS services for transfers; and
    c. within 6 years of eligibility date for CDS services for graduate students.

A High School IEP, 504 Plan, and/or a letter from physician or other professional will not be sufficient to document a learning disability.

As defined in Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008, qualified students with disabilities who meet the technical and academic standards at Auburn University at Montgomery are entitled to reasonable accommodations.
