Community Program Schedule


All classes meet in the 7th floor of the Library Building. 

 

Afternoon
4010 Basic English

March 21 – May 7 (7 weeks) / 2:40 - 3:40 p.m. (Mon & Wed)

English Book Club
March 26 – April 30 (6 weeks) / 2:40 – 4:10 p.m.
The Book Club meets once per week to discuss a chosen short story. The organization is facilitated and organized by an instructor, but the focus is building comprehension strategies and self-sufficient group literature circles (small groups of 3 or 4 students led by a student leader). Thus, the Club is a structured learning experience without a strict curriculum. The Club is free if you sign up for an intermediate, highintermediate,
or advanced level course.

Conversation Partners Program
March 20 – May 1 (6 weeks) / 2:40 – 3:50 p.m.
Conversation Partners is a fun program open to all students enrolled in the ESL Program at AUM. The program is designed to give ESL students opportunities to practice their English conversation skills with native English language speakers. ESL students can build communicative competence and fluency and enjoy making new friends and learning about American culture in this program.

TOEFL™ Test Preparation
April 4 - 25 (4 weeks) / 2:40 – 3:55 p.m. $60 (If you register by March 13: $50)
Four-week TOEFL™ preparation course covers the listening, written structure (Grammar), and reading sections of the TOEFL™ PBT. Each week, we will study each of the three sections of the test. We will either be practicing our strategies and skills, or we will be reviewing test questions. The last session will be a review day. The TOEFL PBT test will be administered on Friday, April 27, at 9 a.m. on the 7th floor of the Library Tower. Course fee does not include the TOEFL test fee of $35.
The course is free if you sign up for any ESL course offered at AUM in March 2012.

4020 Low-intermediate Communicative English

4050 Advanced Conversation Skills
March 21 – April 30 (6 weeks) / 7:55 – 9:10 p.m. (Mon/Wed/Thu)
$210 (If you register by March 13: $189)
Students will engage in formal and informal conversation  on various topics and further develop listening comprehension skills as well as critical skills. The course exposes students to everyday speech of native speakers with various accents to improve listening and speaking strategies. Authentic radio interviews, reports, and lectures help students learn American culture, values, and attitudes, as well as advanced cultural phrases and expressions enhancing the student’s vocabulary skills.
